พูดถึงละครบรอดเวย์เรื่อง Cats หลายๆคนคงไม่ค่อยคุ้นชื่อเท่าไรนัก หากไม่ได้เป็นแฟนละครบรอดเวย์หรือชอบฟังเพลงบรอดเวย์ แต่ถ้าพูดถึงเพลง Memory แล้ว เชื่อว่าหลายๆคนคงจะรู้จักหรือเคยได้ยินชื่อมากกว่า และที่นึกชื่อไม่ออก เมื่อได้ยินทำนองเพลง ก็คงถึงบางอ้อได้เช่นกัน
เพลง Memory เป็นเพลงหนึ่งในละครเพลงเรื่อง Cats เป็นเรื่องแมวกลุ่มที่เรียกว่า Jellicle cats ซึ่งจะจัดงาน Jellicle ball ปีละครั้ง ในคืนพิเศษที่ดวงจันทร์ Jellicle moon ซึ่งแมวจากทั่วทุกแห่งหนจะมารวมตัวกันเพื่อรอฟัง แมวเฒ่า Old Deuteronomy ผู้นำแมวที่จะประกาศชื่อของแมวผู้โชคดีที่จะได้ให้ได้รับชีวิตใหม่ ในดินแดน Heavyside Layer(ชั้นสวรรค์ของแมว) ซึ่งเนื้อหาของเรื่องกล่าวถึงแมวหลายๆตัวแตกต่างกันไป (แน่นอนว่า ไม่ใช่แมวธรรมดาๆ แต่เป็นแมวที่มีบุคลิกต่างๆเฉพาะตัวไม่ต่างจากคน) เป็นต้นว่า Gus, the theater cat ซึ่งในวัยหนุ่มเคยเป็นแมว "ดารา" ร่วมแสดงในละคร หรือ Macavity เจ้าแมวอาชญากรตัวกลั่นผู้ชอบก่อความวุ่นวายแล้วหนีหายตัวไป
Grizabella เคยเป็นแมวที่สวยงามมีเสน่ห์มาก่อน เคยถูกเรียกว่า Grizabella the Glomour cat มันออกจากฝูงไปผจญโลกภายนอก และกลับมาในสภาพที่ทรุดโทรม อยู่โดดเดี่ยวตามลำพัง หวังจะได้รับการยอมรับกลับเข้าฝูง แต่เหล่าแมว Jellicle ต่างแสดงทีท่ารังเกียจ ไม่ยอมแม้จะสัมผัสแตะต้อง Grizabella เลย

บรรดาแมว Jellicle ต่างสนุกสนานกันอย่างมาก แต่เมื่อใดก็ตาม ที่ Grizabella แมวแก่ท่าทางทรุดโทรมปรากฏตัวขึ้นมา แมวทุกตัวก็จะแสดงท่าทีรังเกียจ และหนีหายไป (ยกแมวเฒ่า Old Deuteronomy ไว้ตัวหนึ่ง เพราะถูกจัดไว้ในฐานะ "ประธานพิธี" และเป็นผู้ดูเหล่าแมวทั้งหลาย)

เรื่องราวตกอับ ของชีวิตของ Grizabella บอกเล่าอยู่ในเพลง Memory ซึ่งเป็นเพลงที่มันร้องนั่นเอง

ในฉากท้ายสุดที่ Grizabella ปรากฏตัวนั้น มันร้องเพลง Memory จนจบเพลง เนื้อเพลงท่อนสุดท้ายมีใจความว่า

"...Thouch me...It's so easy to leave me...
All alone with my memory...Of my days in the sun...
If you touch me, you'll understand what happiness is...
Look a new day....Has begun..."

Touch หรือการสัมผัสนั้น คือการแสดงความยอมรับนั่นเอง เพราะทั้งเรื่องก่อนหน้านี้ แมวทุกตัวจะหนีห่าง ไม่ยอมแตะต้อง Grizabella เลย ซึ่งเนื้อร้องท่อนนี้ อาจตีความ(เอาเอง)ได้ว่า หากยอมรับ (และอาจรวมถึงให้อภัย) Grizabella ได้แล้ว ก็จะสามารถเข้าใจได้ว่าความสุขนั้นคืออะไร และวันใหม่ หรือชีวิตใหม่ที่แมวทุกตัวใฝ่หา ก็จะเริ่มขึ้น

แล้วเรื่องก็จบลงด้วยดี แมวทุกตัวยอมรับ Grizabella กลับเข้าฝูงอีกครั้ง และ Grizabella ก็ได้รับเลือกให้เป็นผู้ได้รับชีวิตใหม่

Cats(1981) เป็นผลงานของ Andrew Lioyd Weber ซึ่งเป็น composer ของละครเพลงยุคใหม่ที่มีผลงาน
มากมาย เนื้อเรื่องนำมาจากบทกวีของ T.S. Elliots โดยมี Trevor Nunn เป็นผู้ประพันธ์คำร้อง

Andrew Llyod Weber เกิดที่อังกฤษใน ค.ศ. 1948 เขาโด่งดังเป็นพลุแตกจาก rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar"
นอกจาก Memory แล้ว เพลงอื่นของเขาที่โด่งดังก็มี
