Thank you for contacting Martin. I believe what you might be seeing is what we refer to as "Bear Claw". This is a natural feature in some wood which s the result of an interruption in the normal growth pattern of the tree. This does not have any negative affect on the sound, durability or value of the guitar.

There are actually some people that feel this is a sought fter feature.
