Hi Booby,
Let me chime in a bit,
Well, what I had a chance or more to play is not the low-end ones. It's the Taylor AB-1 that cost about $1,200 at US.
To my opinion, it has a very solid feel to it, almost like the ancient Double bass that you have to stand it up to play with 34" scale neck. Very well built with installed pickup. Acoustic sound is impressive and even better with plugged in but of course it depends on the amp too.
It's not mine, it's my American friend's. He often hosted a Music Gathering at his home which is about 50 miles from my home. So I don't have to bring my Fender bass along.
It's pretty heavy and cumbersume for strap it up and stand to play but sit and play is OK.
I didn't know that Ot (Anupong, Carabao bassist) also used the acoustic bass. I didn't really musically chatted with him much, we talked mainly about some other things in life.
Hope this help

Now this brought me a story that I'd like to share
You see, I used to have Fender Jazz bass when I was in rock band in BKK in late 70s but it was stolen at the club we played! (Impossible Cafe)
So I went to Lang Gra Suang and luck have it incredibly found this used Japanese bass that exactly like Violin bass. Its body shape somewhat liked Hoftner Paul Mc. but to my eyes it was even prettier and has the elaborated head stock (You know, the curvey head exactly like the real violin!) If you happen to know a great bassist and Music director name Felix Pappalardi of the Mountain (well, that another sad story of another musician) that I had played and learned a lot about his bass run and stuffs. It's the replica of Felix's Gibson Bass! So I grabbed it right away.

And it's one of my guitars that I brought with me on my maiden voyage to USA in 1972, too bad I have only two hands so I used one of them for this Jap bass and the other hand for my Yamaha nylon string guitar.
Well, sadly I sold it away somehow that I didn't even remember to get to fund to buy Gibson SG bass locally from Guess who? I bought this SG bass from believe it or not? Frank Zappa bass player
I went to get the SG bass from them while they were about to practice or something at the recording session in Burbank somewhere!!
Oh well, another long story to share, hope you enjoy it
