Let me chime in a bit here,
I'm using a little bit of effects just to prevent some monotony because I'm kind of "One man band" now for the Seniors.

So in stead of just "Me and my guitar", I also use Digitech 2 for some backup harmonizing. And I also use Zoom 123 drum machine for some songs that will keep those seniors (my generation) from falling to sleep and harmonica to wake them up.

So far so good, they seemed to accept it as it is.

Oh, I'm using these via Fishman SoloAmp that I have purchased about a year ago if you are wondering about it.
